STATESBORO, GA (2/12/2020) — A five-year-old girl died Wednesday morning in a car accident after a driver ran a red light.
Thomas Childs, 19, was driving south on Veteran’s Memorial Parkway around 9:45 a.m. on Wednesday. According to Georgia State Patrol Post 45 Cpl. Josh Riddle, Childs failed to stop at a red light before the intersection and T-boned another car.
The vehicle was driven by Melonie White, 35, with four passengers — Destiny Key, 20, Katherine Key, a juvenile boy, and a five-year-old girl. The names of the children and Katherine Key’s age have not yet been released.
Katherine Key was airlifted to a hospital in Savannah, and all others involved in the crash were transported to East Georgia Regional Medical Center.
The five-year-old girl died at the scene of the accident. Bulloch County Coroner Jake Futch reported that her body is being sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab for an autopsy.
The crash is currently being investigated by the GSP Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team (SCRT), and charges are pending.
