COBB COUNTY, GA (2/21/2020) — An Atlanta judge was identified as the victim of an accident on a Cobb County interstate. The crash occurred around noon on Friday on I-75 near Cumberland Boulevard.
The Georgia State Patrol suspects that a silver Mercedes C300 failed to stay in its lane while driving south on the entrance ramp to I-75. The vehicle then crossed over the median and into the general-purpose lanes of the interstate.
An oncoming Chevrolet Express van that was heading south in the far right lane crashed into the driver’s side of the Mercedes. The Mercedes then traveled across the southbound lanes and hit the concrete wall lining the highway.
GSP identified the driver of the Mercedes as Atlanta Municipal Court Judge Elaine Carlisle, 65. Carlisle was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, according to authorities. She was taken to Kennestone Hospital, where she died from a head injury.
State troopers are currently investigating why Carlisle lost control of her car and how the accident happened.
Carlisle served as a municipal court judge in Atlanta for 27 years. She was honored during the 2015-2016 legislative session with a resolution in the Georgia House of Representatives after she retired.
Judge Carlisle was a member of the National Association of Women Judges, the American Judges Association, the NAACP, the State Bar of Georgia, the Atlanta Bar Association, the Gate City Bar Association, the Georgia Trial Lawyers Association, the Howard University Alumni Association, and the Atlanta Alumni Chapter 29 of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.
