FULTON COUNTY, GA (7/28/2020) – The Georgia State Patrol is investigating a crash involving an 18-wheeler that killed one person and injured another early Tuesday morning. The accident happened around 1:40 a.m. on I-20 near Fulton Industrial Boulevard.
According to GSP spokeswoman Franka Young, 52-year-old William Head was driving east on the interstate in his Acura SUV when he lost control of the vehicle. Head then drove across three lanes of the interstate, left the shoulder, and struck a wall. The impact caused the Acura to spin back into the road.
After the initial incident, an 18-wheeler driving east on I-20 hit the Acura on the passenger side causing it to travel several hundred feet. The accident caused the tractor-trailer to catch on fire and hit the median. According to the truck driver, Head was standing near the trunk of his SUV when it was hit. Head was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, while the truck driver sustained critical injuries.
Troopers shut down all lanes of the interstate as they worked the fatal crash. Investigators are still trying to determine what caused Head to lose control of his vehicle.
