CLAYTON COUNTY, GA (6/24/2020) – One person died Wednesday afternoon when a stolen U-Haul truck being chased by police crashed into a tree. The crash occurred on I-285 at the exit ramp for southbound I-675.
According to Georgia State Patrol, the pursuit began on I-75 near Jonesboro Road and continued northbound on to I-285. The stolen U-Haul truck hit several other cars on I-285 while trying to evade a sheriff’s deputy.
When the truck entered the I-675 exit ramp, the sheriff’s deputy attempted a PIT maneuver, which caused the truck to run off the road and strike a tree. Both the driver and the passenger of the stolen U-Haul were rushed to the hospital, where the passenger later died.
Police are still investigating the incident. So far, officials haven’t stated what prompted the pursuit.
