BARTOW COUNTY, GA (2/26/2020) — A 17-year-old boy was killed on Wednesday morning while crossing a railroad track in Bartow County.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, the accident occurred on the railroad track near Hall Station Road. Justin Garland, 17, was driving his 1982 Chevrolet C20 over the railroad tracks onto a private drive when he crossed the path of a CSX freight train.

The conductor of the train told authorities that he used the train’s horn to warn the driver, and was unable to stop the train. The freight train struck the passenger door of the Chevrolet, immediately killing Garland.

Bartow County Coroner Joel Guyton stated that the conditions of the area were foggy around the time of the accident and that there is not a crossing arm where the accident occurred.

Garland’s family has been notified of the accident, and the GSP is currently handling the crash investigation.
