Cartersville, GA (8/23/2020) — The Georgia State Patrol announced that eight charges were filed against Jonathan Mitchell of Cartersville due to his involvement in a fatal Highway 20 crash on Sunday evening.
The state patrol has charged Mitchell with homicide by vehicle in the first degree, driving under the influence, failure to yield turning left, improper turn, hit and run/leaving the scene of an accident, failure to report an accident with death, use of safety belts in the passenger vehicle, and theft by taking.
Mitchell was driving a U-Haul moving truck west on Highway 20. His failure to yield at a left-hand turn at Roving Road resulted in a head-on collision with Myra Turner’s Chevrolet Camero at 5:07 PM. Turner was traveling east on Highway 20 and had the right of way.
Turner died in the collision. There was one other passenger in the Camero, who was transported to the Cartersville Medical Center with minor injuries.
Mitchell carjacked another vehicle immediately following the crash. The Bartow County Sherriff’s Department intercepted Mitchell, and he was transported to the hospital to receive treatment for injuries he sustained in the crash.
According to the Georgia State Patrol, the accident report is not complete yet.
